"Yoik as a starting point" at Nord University is a study developed by Frode Fjellheim and perhaps the only university study in the world where students get to work with yoik as a starting point for creating new music.
At the bottom of this is a solid introduction to yoik as a musical expression - and a basic introduction to Sami culture. Students can create their own yoiks, use elements from traditional yoik in new contexts and learn how Europe's oldest living music tradition can give you new musical ideas for your own music. the only university program in the world where students get to work with yoik as a starting point for creating new music.

One course with two different specializations: Rhythmic choral conducting or Yoik in choir and ensemble. The course is aimed at choir directors, teachers in primary schools, cultural schools and secondary education, musicians and other interested parties.

Frode Fjellheim has been a central and important person in the dissemination of the Sami cultural heritage through his work as a composer, producer and publisher. FONO awards the Bjellesau Prize to Frode Fjellheim primarily because of his work as a publisher in the company VUELIE (which is the South Sami word for yoik)
