The Stay At Home Choir has announced that their first project in 2022 will be Vuelie. Here is what they write on their web page: "Disney fans will recognise Vuelie from Frozen, but we’re thrilled to be singing a magical new choral arrangement, and we’ll be joined in rehearsals by Sámi composer Frode Fjellheim. ✨ 🎶 You’ll also get a unique opportunity to learn to yoik - a traditional style of Sámi singing - and we’re inviting young singers to join us for a special free open session to sing the children’s voice part!"
Beaivi, áhčážan, Eanni, eannážan is a worthy tribute to parts of Valkepää's art. The production shows his world of art and poetry, but to an even greater extent it displays Fjellheim as a composer, a composer who shows us how to make classical music on Sami premises. (scenekunst.no)
Frode Fjellheim has composed music for the opening performance at the Arctic Arts Festival 2021. The 7 female performers who are on stage are renowned dancers, yoikers and singers. The yoik is a key element in the performance and the performers will both yoik and dance.
NB; application deadline April 15!
"Yoik as a starting point" at Nord University is a study developed by Frode Fjellheim and perhaps the only university study in the world where students get to work with yoik as a starting point for creating new music.
At the bottom of this is a solid introduction to yoik as a musical expression - and a basic introduction to Sami culture. Students can create their own yoiks, use elements from traditional yoik in new contexts and learn how Europe's oldest living music tradition can give you new musical ideas for your own music. the only university program in the world where students get to work with yoik as a starting point for creating new music.
The program offers specialization in either Rhythmic choral conducting, Joik or "Slåttemusikk". The program is aimed at choir leaders, teachers in primary school, music schools, upper secondary education, musicians and other interested parties. The teaching takes place in 5 sessions of 3 or 4 days plus some individual guidance. During the sessions, 1 or 2 of the days will be common to all three specializations, while the last two days are set aside for specialization in the following directions: Rhythmic choral conducting, Joik or Slåttemusikk (traditional Norwegian folk music).
